Michael Jackson was a global superstar. He won hearts and minds everywhere. Michael was not simply an extraordinary entertainer, he broke down many racial barriers and allowed opportunities that weren't previously available for many. Yet he was judged most harshly by his American countrymen and the very culture over which he is deemed King.
Joe Jackson, Michael's father, attended The 2009 BET awards held days after Michael's death and was interviewed by a CNN correspondent. When asked if the world even realizes how great Michael's legacy is, Mr. Jackson answered "They seem to realize it now but I wish world would have recognized him (like this) when he was living".
What Mr. Jackson is referencing, and what I have noticed everyone has failed to acknowledge is the barrage of unspeakable chastisement that Michael had to face in "popular culture" over the last 10+ years . The very mention of his name in the media incited ridicule.
Now the very same culture that, arguably, might have driven him into the alleged state of drug abuse and depression, has acquired a state of short-term amnesia which conveniently excuses them of any wrong-doing. The very same culture that drove this man into seclusion now affords him accolades that he can no longer receive. Sad.
May Michael find in death what he could not in the latter portion of his life... peace.
