TO BE A RESPONSIBLE BLACK MAN by Eric Engram
Time has evolved so much since my father's father was growing up, technology, social ethics, language and culture has made pioneering steps to preserve the human race. Even though I see major changes in women rights and some what of a positive change in racial segregation. The one thing that has not changed is the, "Responsibilty of the black man". So, I ask, "What is the responsibilty of the black man?" The majority of black women I have spoken with seems to have the answer to that, like picking out a pair of shoes. As though, it is easy being a black man. Therefore knowing exactly what he needs to do.....for them.
My father always told me in private, "Listen son, women and children can make mistakes, black men can not!"."Be leader not a follower." This stuck in my mind all through my teenage years and into my adult hood. He is saying that if a child or a black woman makes a slight mistake in life or in a social surrounding, it no looked upon with harsh eyes or a disappointing manner. However if a black man makes a small incorrect decision or judgemtn it is looked like he has failed everyone, himself, his family and his people.
This is burden and stress that I don't think women or people understand, black or white.
